Christ Child Society - "Nothing is ever too much to do for a child." - Mary Virginia Merrick, Founder
Christ Child Society of central IL (CCSCI) is a Chapter of the National Christ Child Society, which is a charitable organization dedicated to serving at-risk children, regardless of race or creed. The National Christ Child Society has been continually serving children in need for more than 125 years. Organized by chapters throughout the United States, our 6,000 plus members reach out to teach, motivate, and care for young children in need and to mentor young parents. Although our guiding mission is the same, the programs run by each chapter are unique and changing as they are created to best respond to the specific needs within each community where a chapter is located.
The Central Illinois Chapter of the Christ Child Society is a volunteer organization that was initiated by Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Diocese of Peoria. Our members donate their time and talent to assemble layettes which are given to at-risk families for their newborn babies. We hand-make some of the items for the layettes. Many of the items, however, must be purchased, and no second-hand items are included in the layettes. Approximately 35 layettes are delivered each month to St. Francis, Proctor Unity Point, Methodist Unity Point, St. Joseph, Advocate BroMenn, St. Margaret, St. Mary-Galesburg, Cottage, St. James, Pekin, and St. Mary-Streator Hospitals and to Unity Point Health Clinic.
The Circle in Pontiac provides 5 or more layettes per month for at-risk parents with newborns delivered at OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Hospital in Pontiac. The Pontiac Sewing Circle meets twice per month, the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month at St Mary's Hall, 501 N Chicago, Pontiac, from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm. Monetary donations and donations of new layette items, as well as flannel, knit and lightweight cotton fabric are appreciated. People who sew, knit or crochet are also encouraged to volunteer whether they are a member or not. Even if you are not able to sew, you may help by pinning, cutting, and more. We need you. If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact Shari at 815-419-8620 and we ask that you might consider joining the CCSCI for $40, which is a great way to help with our mission.
